Technology - Core Technology
Magink's core technology is a reflective, cholesteric LCD.
Magink chose to employ the Cholesteric Liquid Crystal technology as it offers a wide range of advantages over other technologies for use in outdoor displays.
Reflective Images The eye has evolved to look at objects that reflect light, rather than look directly at light sources. Thus, an audience has a more "natural" viewing experience when looking at a reflective image. During the day the image is not washed out, and at night the image forms a focal point without becoming intrusive.
Low Power Consumption Our technology works "with" sunlight and does not "fight" against it. Thus, during the day no additional power source is needed for the display, while at night, the system is lit as if it were a standard paper display.
"Thin" and Lightweight Display System The technology is based on three layers of LC between sheets of glass. The system does not have any embedded light sources that make a digital display heavy and cumbersome. As a result, magink offers a relatively thin, light weight display solution.
Reflective mode is very attractive for outdoor applications and other situations in which sunlight is prevalent. When used indoors, reflective displays offer a less obtrusive option, producing natural and soft images that enhance the environment rather than dominate it. The eye also suffers less muscle fatigue when viewing reflective images as opposed to artificially bright images produced by emissive or transmissive displays. The overall effect of reflective mode is more like changeable wallpaper; far more pleasing to the eye. A digital reflective display can also create a dynamic surface with natural-looking images.
